Communal Karaoke vs. Private Karaoke - The big debate
Karaoke Bars offer either communal karaoke or private karaoke
Communal Karaoke Bars
Communal Karaoke bars are the old-school form of karaoke and what most people associate the word with. Singers nominate themselves to sing a song, and pay a pound or two to allow themselves to entertain the other punters in the bar. The atmosphere can be a lot of fun in these places, though they certainly don’t appeal to everyone. It can get a bit too much when you’re forced to listen to complete strangers singing ‘I will survive’ for the umpteenth time at the top of their voices. Also, if you do want to sing you may have to patiently wait your turn whilst pretending to be enjoy listening to everyone else!
Private Karaoke Bars
Private Karaoke bars, like the Vocal Rooms, are a relatively new form of entertainment. They allow you to hire you own private area so show offs need not apply! Many people who run a mile at the thought of communal karaoke are surprised at how much they love private karaoke. It’s a completely different experience because you are with your friends, singing along to tunes you have selected, with everyone taking part rather than just the one singer stuck on stage feeling either very drunk or very awkward. Most bars offer room service drinks and food, and they are great for special events where you want your own special space like birthdays or hen parties.

Liverpool karaoke bars include: Smokie Mo’s which draws in a good crowd of professional singers and general punters. It’s opposite to Rileys and a huge bar with both live music and karaoke. The two bars generally give good service from friendly bar staff. If you like it loud and brash then you’ll love it there, but it’s not for the faint hearted or shrinking violets. The Picture House has karaoke every Saturday with DJ Paul. Slaters Bar also has a karaoke night, where apparently the drinks are as cheap as chips.
There are a number of communal karaoke bars in London but perhaps the biggest is Murphis, Farringdon. There are also numerous other bars that host karaoke evenings but our favourites are The Dolphin Hackney and The Legion Old Street (their night’s Hot Breath Karaoke).

The biggest of the private karaoke bar operators is Lucky Voice, founded by Martha Lane Fox. They have venues in London, Soho and in Tiger Tiger Manchester and Cardiff. Other private karaoke bars in London include Karaoke Box Frith Street, Karaoke Box Farringdon, K-Box Leicester Square, Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes (who have 3 excellent private karaoke rooms). In Bristol there’s Karaoke Me, in Norwich there’s Sing Sing and in Leeds there’s Okay Karaoke. We don’t know of any other private karoke bars in Liverpool except for the Vocal Rooms… though we’re not sure why you’d look anywhere else than the UK’s fluffiest private karaoke experience!
